One of the first and most important purchases a parent will make for their new child is that of a pram. The sheer number of different types of prams, strollers and travel systems some costing well over a £100 can make for a very confusing time.

Pushchairs, sometimes called buggies and strollers, are one of the most popular choices for new parents, these comfortable, lightweight and collapsible models of prams are perfect for use if travelling by public transport or the car.

Pushchairs come in an array of different types such as 3-wheeler, flat folding pushchairs, umbrella folding pushchairs and double pushchairs, so making the right choice for your child can be a difficult one. You must ask yourself questions such as: is the pushchair as comfortable for you to push as it is for your baby to sit/lie in? Does it fit in the boot of your car as well as into your lifestyle? Is it suitable for a newborn and does it come with essential extras such as a car seat (travel system)?

Types Of Pushchair

3-Wheeler pushchairs, sometimes referred to as all-terrain, are as at home on rough ground as they are on city streets. These robust yet lightweight highly manoeuvrable pushchairs often come with car seats and carrycots making them one of the more popular choices among parents. Just be sure to check that you have sufficient room in the car or at home when this type of pushchair is folded.

Flat folding pushchairs are robust and usually suitable for new born babies if the seat can recline to a lie-flat position. They tend to be heavier and not as easy to fold down as an umbrella folding model although they are an economical purchase when compared to travel systems.

Umbrella folding pushchairs are usually not suitable for new born babies and are targeted more towards children from six months upwards. They get their name from the way they fold into a tall thin shape much like an umbrella. They are tremendously easy to fold down, usually with only one hand, and are also very easily stored.

Double pushchairs are obviously for two babies/twins, and if fully reclining suitable for new born babies.

Baby prams have been a useful, stylish and elegant way to transport baby since the victorian times. In this article we explore the history of baby prams.

The welcoming of a new baby to the family brings on many new decisions. How to best provide for your little angel so that everyone is happy - including your baby - is always a challenge. You want to provide the best of everything, including food, clothing, environment, and of course baby equipment. Though a briefly forgotten part of our history, traditional-style baby prams are once again becoming popular.

Baby prams, shortened from perambulator, date back to the Victorian Era in the United Kingdom, when originally offered as a gift to Queen Victoria. Prams have features which provide much comfort for you baby. The flat bottomed, carriage-style pram provides a traditional alternative to baby strollers or pushchairs (British name for strollers). With many new details such as improvements to suspension for added comfort and noise reduction, baby prams, once very common in affluent families, are now popular worldwide among all lifestyles and tastes.

One of the most difficult decisions new parents make is choosing the baby pram or stroller which is best for them. Safety and comfort always top the list of requirements, closely followed by design and fashion. But why chose baby prams over all other styles of baby transport? One reason is that prams are designed to have babies face the person pushing the carriage.

This helps reduce any wind to the baby’s face and promotes additional eye contact which is highly recommended during your infants first months. And don’t forget you are able to adore your new bundle at the same time! Another reason is baby prams are designed for stability and a smooth ride. Wide wheels help keep the pram from tipping, and the advent of ‘four-wheel drive’ helps improve steering and maneuverability.

Another innovative design improvement includes two separate sets of wheels. One set of wheels is the larger, all-terrain style for smooth ride and stability, and the other being the swivel style to allow ease of steering. Most prams have excellent storage capacity under the bassinet to allow you to carry all of baby’s necessities - as well as some of your own.

And of course the fully reclined seating area allows your little one to have restful sleep. When you are stopped for a rest the wheel locks help keep the pram stationary, and of course a safety harness helps keep baby safely inside the bassinet.

You can find much variety not only at the closest infant or baby shop near your home, but also in the convenience of online shopping on your computer.

Once you have finally chosen your style of baby pram and made your purchase, make sure you have no missing or damaged parts and there are no worn areas in the fabric.

Most of the newer designs provide fabrics which breathe with your child to help keep the environment inside the carriage comfortable and not overheated.

When you opt for the traditional, classic style that baby prams offer, keep in mind the rich history of the pram and the comfort it provides for your baby, as well as the convenience it provides for your and your family.

Strollers have developed quite a bit in the past few years. In the past, if you were looking for a stroller you would have to choose between two main models: an oversized pram – a large black stroller where the baby lies down, or a small, precarious stroller that your child would sit in, but would fly around the sidewalk and break easily. Today, parents are lucky to have a wide variety of well made strollers at their disposal. And this is a good thing too, because a good stroller is a parent’s connection with the rest of the world.

Parents rely on pushchairs strollers to transport their growing family outside of the house. Indeed, some parents even find that there are times when the only possible way they can get their child to sleep is with a walk in the stroller. No matter whether you are using your stroller for work or pleasure, it is clear that strollers (or pushchairs, as they are known in Britain), are a mainstay in modern living, an essential tool for the busy parent on the go and the relaxed parent out for a stroll.

What is the best stroller for my needs?

Your stroller is going to be one of the most important and frequently used baby accessories you own. For this reason, it is essential that you find the perfect stroller for your newborn. What is perfect for you, however, depends on what you plan to do with your stroller. Strollers come in a variety of configurations to meet the variety of needs and situations parents face in modern society.

If space it not a concern, either in your house or in your car or mini-van, you should be happy with a standard or full-size stroller. The standard stroller will give you and your child a high level of comfort, and be easy to use. However, if space is at a premium, or you are primarily going to use your stroller while you are out shopping, or want a stroller you can take on trips and that can be brought out quickly, you should consider purchasing a compact stroller. These lightweight strollers are small and fold away quickly and easily.

The main drawback to getting a compact stroller is that they will not be as strong as standard strollers. Also, because they are lighter and more flimsy, they will be harder to push. As a compromise, consider getting a standard stroller and keeping a compact stroller in the car for when you have to run out with your baby for groceries.

Those parents who plan on going for jogs with their baby, or for long walks in the forest, you should definitely consider buying a jogger, also known as a jogging stroller. These strollers have exploded onto the scene in the last few years. One of the main benefits of a jogging stroller is that it has large air-filled tires, which will give you a smooth ride over bumpy surfaces. The handlebars are also specially designed to allow you to hold on as you jog behind the stroller.

Your baby may not be getting any exercise while you run, but he or she will sure enjoy the ride!

Be sure to take the time to make sure you have the best possible stroller for your child and your lifestyle; after all, you will be spending a lot of your time over the next few years behind the handle bars.

There is a myriad of pushchairs strollers on the market. Wonderful sounding names such as Bugaboo and Cosatto. Most parents will know of Mamas and Papas - but what are the most important aspects to choosing the right pushchair for your child or children?

Is a pushchair or stroller a fashion statement? You could be forgiven for believing that it is. Many new pushchairs boast ultra-modern designs, colour changing abilities and they come with a price tag to match.

I first became interested in pushchairs when I became a father - obviously! - and like many parents fell into the marketing trap, choosing a pushchair for all the wrong reasons. The right reasons for choosing a pushchair are weight - it should be light, mobility - it should be easy to push, price - it should be affordable and sensibly-priced, it must meet safety standards and it should be a manageable size.

In terms of size this was our first mistake. There are some wonderfully attractive three-wheeler pushchairs/strollers available (the sort you see in glossy magazines, being pushed by celebrities out jogging) but wait, they are not practical on a day-to-day basis unless you intend to go jogging. Try getting through a shop doorway - many are as wide as twin pushchairs.

What if you have twins? Tandem strollers have one seat in front of the other, but if you have ever tried to push one you will realise that trying to wheelie up a kerb-stone is like doing it will a full supermarket trolley.

Then there are tandem buggies that are no longer than a single buggy - but they have really high handles so if you are 5 foot or just a little taller they will be impossible to push.

There are lots of things to consider when buying a pushchair or buggy. I created a pushchair review site so parents could post honestly about their experience to ensure fewer people fall into the huge marketing trap surrounding pushchairs.

There are lots of really positive, good points and there are some wonderful pushchairs with clever designs, good looks and low prices.

If you are active parents who love to roam the countryside and rough terrain then a good 3 wheeler is maybe the one you should choose, making sure it is comfortable for your child.

There are some excellent ones on the market with good suspension so your child gets a smooth ride and it also makes it easy for you to push.

You can buy the hood and apron separately if you wish and some of them come with pneumatic tyres and a pump. There are lots of accessories to go with the 3 wheeler such as footmuff, water bottle for those hot sunny days, fabric seat liners, insect nets, generous baskets etc. and if you choose one with an adjustable handle it will be comfortable for both of you to push, otherwise one of you could end up with backache!

Make sure it folds easily for travelling and also make sure the space behind the rear axle is big enough otherwise you will catch your feet on it each time you take a stride. There are some very robust models on the market which are the true all terrain pushchairs and will withstand rough ground, jogging, and even sand.

If you use a car, check the size of your boot and compare it with the folded dimensions of the pushchair you are thinking of choosing, making sure it will fit before you buy it, Also Choose a sturdy model with lockable wheels as you get better maneuverability over rough ground.

These 3 wheelers are great for days out at the park, beach and jogging, and are best suited for the active parents who do a lot of walking but they are not ideal if you use your pushchair for shopping and hopping on and off buses trains etc.

You can spend a lot of money on a pushchair and yet still get it wrong!

To read independent reviews of three-wheeler pushchairs by parents, view features and compare prices visit the website 3-wheeler pushchair reviews.
